Originated in the 1880s as a Hawaiian version of a small guitar-like instrument brought to Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants, the cavaquinho, the ukulele ("uke") is the instrument most aicommonly associated with the Hawaiian Islands. The name translates to "jumping flea," although according to Queen Lili'uokalani, the last Hawaiian monarch, the name means “the gift that came here”, from the Hawaiian words uku (gift or reward) and lele (to come).
